![]() ![]() ![]() Having Wednesday celebrate and normalize the Addams Family's differences is one of the best ways it compares to earlier iterations. However, her friends can accept her regardless of her differences and make an effort to understand her. In Wednesday, Wednesday always goes against the status quo and especially against expectations for young women. Four of the original cast (John Astin, Carolyn Jones, Jackie Coogan, and Ted Cassidy) returned for the special, which involved the Addamses in a mystery with the Scooby-Doo gang. Even though the Addams are always depicted as strange and kooky, they're a very close-knit and loving family who care about doing what's right. 'Wednesday is Missing'), which first aired on CBS Saturday morning, September 23, 1972. One of these major themes is that being different isn't scary. However, in addition to Easter eggs and similar visual effect techniques, Wednesday also carries on the Addams Family legacy by encompassing the major themes that have always surrounded the family. The Addams Family, Americas first family of ghastly giddiness, are here in all of their ghoulish glory in the original TV series based on the delightfully demented imagination of Charles Addams. ![]() Other references were a little harder to detect, such as Ortega incorporating Lisa Loring's Wednesday shuffle into her dance scene or background photos depicting Morticia's (Carolyn Jones) wicker chair or the memorable Cousin Itt. Some of the references are more obvious than others, such as a secret code in Wednesday being two finger snaps that match the iconic theme created by the 1964 Addams Family TV series or Tyler (Hunter Doohan) saying Lurch's (Ted Cassidy) famous "You rang?" line. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That's all I'm gonna say in this section so if you haven't read EoS or the other books in the series, turn away now or forever hold your peace.Īlright. The characters matured and grew in this book and it's interesting to go back and read the first book and see how far they've come. I loved reading from everybody's POV and getting to experience not only their adventure but also their thoughts. There was never once a time when I was bored reading from someone's perspective. But I started loving them last book and I was addicted to them in this novel. When I first read Heir of Fire, I wasn't a big fan of multiple POV books. It was a little mind blowing if I'm being truthful. We see new places and go on new adventures as well as revisit some. In this installment, the world expands quite a bit. ![]() All of these books get better and better as the series continues. There's not much I can say without spoiling the other books in the series, but I can say that this book blew me away. I can really only sum this up by saying that I loved this book. I'm not even sure how I'm going to be able to write this review. ![]() ![]() ![]() When admitting that, I realize how immensely naive and prideful it all sounds – especially that last bit. I was a teenager! Not only that, I was a fairly arrogant one, who believed that he knew everything, had seen everything worth seeing, done everything worth doing, and had read every fantasy series that mattered. Many of her characters aren't even sure of their own ancestry. Her writing usually puts her characters in situations involving mysterious powers that they don't understand. There are forests, castles, and lords or kings, minstrels, tinkers and wizards. McKillip's stories usually take place in a setting similar to the Middle Ages. I actually prefer this kind of novella to one that tells some back story of a character. I couldn’t find more of a connection between The Witch of Duva and Shadow and Bone other than they are both set in the same world. The Witch of Duva, like Tales of Beedle the Bard, is a fairy tale set in the same world that doesn’t necessarily advance the story but functions to flesh out the world and add a little more magic to it. This prequel novella reminded me of Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. The Witch of Duva is a beautifully written fairy tale that feels close to our own fairy tales but it messes with your expectations by twisting the story around in new ways. This story is a companion folk tale to Leigh Bardugo’s debut novel, Shadow and Bone. But it’s just possible that the danger may be a little bit closer to home.
